So, the only thing I did in December was Swings

I put on an online kettlebell swing challenge for the month of December with clients and some former clients and a few of their friends. We did a different Kettlebell Quickie every day in December. That was the only exercise I did in December. I stretched and did some mobility work, but no other exercise; just swings. Of the 31 days in December, I missed one of the days, the day where it was 300 swings. I think missing only one day was pretty damn good. Challenges are interesting. Usually everyone is gung ho to start and thinks, “OMG, this is going to be fantastic!” Come about day 10 or so, it turns into, “OMG, this sucks ass!” This challenge did not feel like that for me. Maybe because I didn’t do any other workouts or maybe because I love kettlebells. I did wonder though if I would lose strength, or if I would gain anything just doing swings. I just tested it. I can still press the 18kg bell, no problem. I love that I didn’t lose any strength. I’ll be honest, I ate like shit for about three weeks straight with the holidays sprinkled in. Even with the crap eating, I did not gain any weight and kept up my strength. My quads and abs have more definition and that also makes me happy. I am so glad I finished this challenge. It feels great!

Full Circle

Hmmmmm, where to start. How about the beginning. Sixth grade. I remember it like it was yesterday. Lincoln School (now Lincoln Apartments) Her name was Annette Lenners. Very pretty. Blond hair. Very nice. We were out for recess and she was saying how after school she had to leave right away because she had to do her aerial. What the heck was an aerial? She had on a leotard under her clothes. What the heck was a leotard? I remember asking her many questions about this. Gymnastics. Wow! Where? When? How did I not know this existed? By the way, an aerial is a cartwheel with no hands, also known as awesome! (I wonder where she is now). So I signed up for summer rec gymnastics, during the summer of finishing sixth grade going into 7th. I was very athletic and very strong. I loved anything to do with this thing called gymnastics. The coach loved me. Pull-ups? No problem. 15. I did situps and pushups every night while watching TV. I would do them during commercials while my dad and I were watching TV. I lived and breathed gymantsics. I absolutely loved it. I was hooked. I worked my ass off. It was sooooooooo cool. I couldn’t believe how much fun it was. I found it. My passion. It’s all I thought about. I couldn’t stop. I constantly was practicing. One night I kept kicking up into a handstand and would not stop. I practicted and practiced. My mom told me I should stop. Why? Are you crazy? Because broken collarbone. What? How could that happen? Seriously? No gymanstics for six weeks until my collarbone healed. I remember when 7th grade season started was the day I got my brace off. Woo Hoo!!! I couldn’t wait to get back at it. My favorite was bars. So fun. And I worked my ass off in order to do an aerial. I could do a standing aerial, which meant one step and boom…no handed cartwheel. Fun!

Until that day…I don’t blame my coach, I really don’t blame anyone. It was just a part of the way it was at that time and even worse at this time. I got the talk…the you’re a little on the heavy side. You really should lose 10 pounds. Hmmm. I recall I weighed about 116 pounds at that time. Shit, I thought I looked great. Here came the body image issues. I think I was going into 9th or 10th grade. Wow. I must be a real fast ass, I remember thinking. Everyone ate like crap then. I remember before gymnastics practice eating Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and drinking Coke. Because energy. Right? Whatever. No clue about nutrition at all. I remember ordering a diet out of “Teen Magazine” (the details are amazing, no? scarred perhaps). The “diet” wasn’t bad, hindsight being 20/20. Plenty of protein. I lost a little weight, but it wasn’t enough. So… now that my body image and confidence were completely fucked, I started bingeing and purging–zero to 60. That didn’t take long. My best friend and I. Both of us. Bingeing and purging. Full blown bulimia. We figured this shit out. Eat easy to purge food. Disgusting, I know. This went on for a good year and a half to two years. I finally just quit. Why was I doing this? Because someone told me I needed to lose weight? Seriously, why let another person have that much say in my actions. Obviously, the bulimia was a control thing for me. I could control it, since I had no control over anything else. I was starting to realize how unhealthy it was. I didn’t want to be like that. I wanted to be healthy for the right reasons. I wanted to like who I was.

I have always been involved in and loved health and fitness and especially nutrition. I taught gymnastics through the summers for the summer rec program and loved helping the kids. It was so fun to watch them prgress.

Flash forward to around 2010. I finally decided to get my personal trainer certification and to pursue the kettlebell stuff, which I absolutely loved, as much as gymnastics, if not more. Being older and wiser I could see the benefit of the kettlebells and how they can change the body without the impact on the joints. Positive. All in, living and breathing kettlebells. Went to Omaha and got my HKC certification, then Santa Fe for RKC, then Dallas for RKC II. I have learned so much about myself and I have to say I am happy in my skin. I really like me.

Here is the full circle part. It is 2015 and I have had the opportunity to train six girls for the summer. A 10 week program. I did not want these girls to ever hate their bodies or be dissatisfied with how they look, or wonder if they fit in, or think they are fat. I will never tell a kid at that age they need to lose weight. I wanted these girls to have a positive experience. I wanted them to gain confidence, get stronger and be happy in their skin. I think I accomplished that. Every session with these girls I couldn’t help but think back on my experience. I did not want to scar them for life. I made sure to choose my words wisely. I was not easy on them, but at the same time, I made sure they had fun and enjoyed themselves, even though they were working hard. I hope I touched their lives in a positive way. No negatives here.

Full Circle – I know this is my path in life. This is God’s plan for me. I can feel it.

One Step Forward And Two Steps Back

So, my iron levels have been extremely low. I had some testing done and a uterine biopsy done before I left for PCC. I got back from PCC and had a follow up appointment on the 18th. Well, there was something in my uterus so she wanted to do an exploratory surgery and see what it was and then she would do an endometrial ablasion as well and hopefully eliminate a lot of bleeding.

Fast forward to May 27th, the day of the surgery. I was extremely nervous as I have never had any kind of surgery or anesthesia. I had to be at the hospital at 6 a.m. to get checked in and ready to go. Ready to go was 6:30 a.m. They were surprised it went so fast. It is because I take no medications and have no health problems. So now we sit and wait for the doctor to get there, which is around 7 a.m. Doctor gets there and goes over how everything will go. They take me back to the operating room…FREEZING COLD. Holy crap! They get me all set up on the bed and the mask goes over my face. I think I made it four breaths and I was out.

Came to okay and felt okay. I didn’t feel sick or anything, so I was happy. Hubby told me that during the surgery the doctor came out becuase the mass in my uterus was a lot bigger than she thought it would be and she wanted to make sure it was okay to get it out of there or to just abort the surgery and wait until another time. She was 99 percent sure it was not cancer, so they decided to remove the mass. I do recall her talking to me when I woke up and telling me that everything went well. WHEW.

Had to sit around for a wihle and then Tayler took me home. Now just to wait for the results of the biopsy, which should take about a week. It is really strange, but I can already tell a difference in how I feel. The body is an amazing thing.

Now we move on. I am starting my new program on June 1st and hope I will feel okay. I know I will need to start light. I will share my training here as well. I will also be starting a WHOLE30 on June 1st, so if anyone wants to tag along let me know. I will set up a private Facebook group to share thoughts, recipes and just general feelings.

I am also very excited for Monday, becuase my Kids Bootcamp starts. Ten week summer program using bodyweight, kettlebells and resets. It is going to be so fun.

I Was Wrong. Two And One Half Weeks to PCC – Today's Training

HOLY SHIT – I thought it was 3.5 weeks to PCC, but I was wrong.  It is 2.5 weeks to PCC.  Eek!!!

Today’s Training

20 – squats

20 – push ups

20 – hanging knee raise

10 – Aussie pull ups (forearm hurts) Round 1, Rounds, 2, 3, 4, and 5 were 5 pullups

I might die.  I have zilch energy today!!!

Three And A Half Weeks To PCC And I've HIt A Wall and Exciting Things To Come

Yep, I do not feel like training at all.  This is not good.  I have 3.5 weeks to go to PCC and I feel like I’ve hit the wall.  Not sure what my problem is.  Lots of stuff going on I guess.  My arm hurts again.  I tried a pull up last week and seemed to have tweaked it a little.  Chin-ups are fine.  Pull-ups are out.  Sucks.  My hamstring/glute issue continues to bother me.  Not debilitating, just irritating.  I need to get it taken care of though.  I need to find a way to break down the pain and loss of range of motion.  I feel it will happen soon.

I am ready to not HAVE to train.  I am ready to listen to my body and do what feels right.  If I want to lift heavy like a mo-fo one day, I’m going to.  If I feel like swinging like crazy one day, I’m going to.  If I feel like doing nothing one day, I’m going to.

On a brighter note…I have some good things planned in the future and hope they work out.

I went to a bodyweight exercise workshop on Saturday in Sioux Falls, hosted by Results Personal Training and presented by Aleks Salkin.  I wanted to do this in order to help me prepare for PCC in May, about 4 weeks out.  I left my house about 6 a.m. and spent six hours, crawling, doing push ups, chin ups, handstands, pistols, etc.  All bodyweight exercises and the progressions of each one.  Progressions are the most important thing to learn, in my opinion.  The day was great and I learned a lot.  Took the day off from training today, as my body is tired.  I just want to sleep.  Anyway… here are a few pics from the day.
